THE LINUX EVENT OF THE YEAR

ONE LINUX DAY: *THE* LINUX EVENT OF THE YEAR!

Everyone was taken by surprise. Despite the Impeachment proceedings at the Senate and eLagda's International Day of Protest, One Linux Day - a joint project of the Development Academy of the Philippines and the Bluepoint Institute of Higher Technology Foundation to promote the use of the Linux operating system in the Philippines - was successfully conducted last December 13, 2000 at the DAP building in Pasig City and was attended in by around 103 delegates, an immense number of visitors, and well-respected members of the print and broadcast media. Coupled with an interesting Plenary Session, exciting Technical Tracts, an open-to-the-public Linux showcase, booths from IT industry leaders, and five-star facilities and refreshments courtesy of DAP, 1LD proved true to it's tagline and was indeed *the* Linux event of the year.

SALAMAT, DANKE, MERCI, THANKS!

The Bluepoint Institute of Higher Technology Foundation and the Development Academy of the Philippines would like to thank everyone who contributed to the astounding success of One Linux Day. Special thanks go out to the 1LD team:

IN THE NEWS

Lifted from a post by Clement Rasul, DAP-CCO Director, Total Linux graduate, BLUE member, and 1LD Technical Session Resource Person (Samba Server) last 12-22-00 19:46 in the Development Academy of the Philippines' online discussion board:

Guys, the conference has elicited two news articles. One article by Edu H. Lopez of the Manila Bulletin entitled "Government could save millions in IT spending with Linux" is I think a welcome response from the press. This is what I think the conference intended to promote.

The other article by Geoffrey Ramos of Computerworld Philippines entitled "Users urged to tread carefully with Linux" I think has a different coverage slant. The writer I think missed the context of the discussion when Engels tried to discuss the challenges that one has to encounter in shifting to Linux. I think what the conference tried to convey is that shifting to Linux will require some change in mindset (especially if you are very used to working in Windows). Once you have done that, then you can easily move from Windows to Linux without much problem. This approach to Linux is I think not only true for Linux, but is also true for other operating systems (and even will hold true if you move from Win98 to WinNT or Win2000).

The Computerworld article (by Geoffrey Ramos) sounding like a warning or caution is I think what the conference does not want to project. The challenges discussed by Engels is intended to elicit response from the participants to create a community of Philippine Linux users that help each other solve common day-to-day problems.

Net 25's coverage of One Linux Day will be aired on January 7, 2001 from 9:00 PM - 10:00 PM on Lisa Docena's Convergence. It will be replayed on January 14, 2001 from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM.
