This tour is made possible with the help of American Power Conversion and Computerworld Philippines. FOURTH STOP: OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE SEMINAR AT CPU
The Bluepoint Institute, in cooperation with the Central Philippine University (CPU), conducted an Open Source Software Seminar last October 3, 2003 at the CAP Building in Gen. Luna, Iloilo City. Iloilo is located on the island of Panay in the Philippines. Some 450 kilometers from Manila, it is the gateway of the Western Visayas Region. Iloilo is 55 minutes by plane from Manila, 30 minutes from Cebu, 90 minutes from Puerto Princesa, Palawan, and one hour and 45 minutes away from Gen. Santos City. It has forty-three municipalities divided into five districts. The two major cities in the province are Iloilo and Passi City. The main dialect in the region is Hiligaynon but a majority of the people can comprehend and speak English and Tagalog.CPU is a non-stock, non-profit Christian Institution of higher learning, where a well-rounded program of education is offered under influences that strengthen faith and build up character. It was founded in 1905 as the Jaro Industrial School by missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. In 97 years, CPU has grown from an elementary school with 17 pupils to a widely known university with an enrollment of over 12,000. The 24-hectare campus, which was originally chosen for its quiet and relative isolation, is now a veritable community by itself, with more than 30 buildings used for classrooms and support facilities. |
